With his zingers flying like canniballistic missiles, he returned from the O. Henry Pun-Off in Austin with a bronze medal! (check out the pictures here, complete with descriptions) Pat and the second place contestant scored 38 out of 40 possible points, (the first-place winner, Francis McGrath, scored a rare 40 out of 40). Second-place was determined by audience applause; as charming as he was, Pat the Canadian was unable to oust Jim Hahn from Waco for silver. As Pat reports it was an extremely worthwhile event with hundreds of avid spectators, so next year both Gents hope to be there to pun-ish the competition! Inspired by the spirit of O. Henry, we shall redouble our efforts to organize the first annual Ron Maclean All-Can-eh-dian Pun-off for current and aspiring Canadian punsters. Stay tuned! In just over 24 hours, Pat will leave for sunny Austin, Texas to compete in the O. Henry Pun-Off. Due to unfortunate scheduling conflicts, Rhain will not be able to travel to Austin, but we have worked together on preparing the puns for the competition and we are confident that Pat will do well! To our hardcore fans (you both know who you are): if you have not yet done so, please donate to help offset the cost of sending Pat to represent Canada at the Pun-Off. It is a pricey endeavour and any fiduciary assistance will be greatly appreciated. 5/10/05 Sweet egregious airplay: the Gents will be interviewed on Toronto's CHIN Radio (1540 AM/100.7 FM) tomorrow morning! A technical matter: Our Pun of the Day section will switch over to Movable Type, a more convenient posting software. So all the March puns will disappear from the current Pun of the Day index and a new index will start from scratch in April. But don't worry, all fresh and original March puns are alive and well in the Compundium! To those subscribing to our RSS feed, you may have to re-subscribe to the Pun of the Day feed due to this minor bit of housekeeping. It seems he's been out to get us ever since that radioactive dictionary fell on his head. If you have gnus of Doctor Pun's real-life whereabouts, please email us at pungents@pungents.com, so we may take appropriate action. Apologies for the inconvenience; this is quite a lot of exposure for the Gents, so please do bare with us! [UPDATE: We're told the story should appear tomorrow (Thursday). Puns like these will be on exclusive display at the Masochist next Wednesday - so, as Dominik Hasek would tell you, be sure to Czech them out! 1/19/05 We have enabled RSS syndication for the Puns on Demand and the Pun of the Day. Additional changes include a new discrete links page; a monthly archive for the Puns on Demand and Pun of the Day sections, and a general polish and tightening of the layout. We hope you find these improvements helpful; we'll continue to upgrade the site and its features on a regular basis... So just like the ecstatic chicken, we hope you hen-joy! 12/2/04 WELCOME TO PUNGENTS.COM! This site is devoted to puns in all their glory, as witnessed by the original Pun Gents. We'll have fresh Puns of the Day, original yolks cracked by the Pun Gents and conveniently archived in our Compundium. We'll also approach the gnus and general items of interest with a decidedly punny bent. We have a section on definitions and debates surrounding pun theory, so you can sort out the ever-confusing paradigm of "pun vs. play on words". Our pride and joy is Puns on Demand, where you provide the Pun Gents with a scenario and we provide you with a humourous utterance handy for that scenario. We hope you enjoy our site, and come back every day for fresh content. If you have any comments or suggestions, please drop us a line at pungents@pungents.com. Now let the punning linguistics begin! - Pat and Rhain, the PunGents.com team |
